What is phased array ultrasonic testing?
Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is a 20-year-old, powerful nondestructive testing method that permits electronic scanning (fast, saves mechanical movement, real-time B-scan), electronic focusing (better sensitivity, better resolution), and beam steering (electronically adjusting the beam angle, to provide sector scans without moving the probe). This allows inspectors to detect, size, and characterize defects with greater accuracy and flexibility than conventional single-element ultrasonic testing without needing to physically move the probe.
